
Dr. Maxwell Helfgott, a native Washingtonian, has spent decades caring for patients in the community he calls home. He earned his undergraduate degree from Grinnell College before receiving his medical degree from The George Washington University. He then completed his internship at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York City, followed by his ophthalmology residency and chief residency at Washington Hospital Center in 1976.
Dr. Helfgott has been in private practice ever since, bringing extensive experience and a thoughtful, patient-centered approach to his care. He specializes in anterior segment eye surgery, including cataract, corneal, glaucoma, and refractive procedures. Known for his steady expertise and dedication to his patients, he takes pride in helping individuals achieve and maintain their best possible vision.
In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Helfgott has played an important leadership role in the field of ophthalmology. He served as Chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at Washington Hospital Center from 1995 to 2010, where he helped guide the training of future ophthalmologists and the advancement of patient care.
Dr. Helfgott has been recognized multiple times as a “Top Doctor” by Washingtonian Magazine. He is grateful for the long-standing relationships he has built with his patients and remains committed to providing attentive, personalized care.
